Custom AMI (Smart Meter) Data Visualization Platform
Client: Veitur (Utility & Distribution System Operator)
Timeline: 2024-2025
Region: Reykjavik, Iceland
Project Summary
Anton & Company developed a custom desktop application that enables Veitur engineers to visualize and analyze real-time smart meter and GIS data across their low-voltage network. Designed for accessibility and performance, the platform transforms raw AMI and Utility Network data into intuitive engineering insights—empowering a broader set of stakeholders to participate in data-informed planning.
Client Motivation
Following its rollout of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and the adoption of the ArcGIS Utility Network model, Veitur accumulated a wealth of operational data. However, engineers and planners lacked a seamless way to access and interpret that data day-to-day. Existing tools required specialized software knowledge or siloed access. Anton & Company was engaged to bridge this gap—delivering a user-friendly interface that supports everything from transformer capacity checks to load profile reviews.
Developed to meet Client Priorities
The tool was developed in close collaboration with Veitur’s Digital Transformation and Electrical Distribution teams. Special attention was given to three shared priorities:
Visualization of the system in a way that mirrored real network topology.
Interpretability, helping users understand what each meter represented and where it sat in the system.
Proximity to Capacity Limits, enabling engineers to instantly identify potential constraints on feeders and transformers.
By focusing on these elements, Anton & Company ensured that the tool could deliver immediate, practical value across Veitur’s internal teams.
Application Highlights
Interactive System Viewer: Browse substations and individual meters, and explore real-time data for voltage, current, power, and frequency at the 3-phase or per-phase level.
GIS-Driven Map Interface: Navigate Veitur’s distribution system with live topology overlays and location-aware context.
On-Demand Querying: Retrieves data dynamically from SQL and API endpoints—optimized to handle large volumes without performance loss.
Built-in Statistical Tools: Review daily load shapes, histograms, and transformer aggregations with visual cues when approaching thermal or planning limits.
Portable, Secure Deployment: Packaged as a standalone executable. Access is secured via Microsoft domain credentials, with no need for additional credentials or remote connections.
Results & Impact
Improved Access: Engineers without AMI portal or PowerFactory access can now explore operational data independently.
Cross-Departmental Utility: Deployed to key users in engineering, planning, and operations teams—supporting everything from capacity planning to customer impact analysis.
First-of-Its-Kind Tool: Marked the first practical use of Veitur’s smart meter data in low-voltage grid planning.
Built for Growth: Provides a flexible foundation for future efforts in automated analytics, scenario modeling, and predictive planning.
Client Testimonial
“Working with Anton & Company has been a key part of our efforts to bridge system and AMI data into practical planning tools. Their integration of smart meter time series, GIS network data, and internal asset records resulted in an intuitive, dynamic dashboard application that gave our engineers immediate insight into grid behavior. The work laid a strong foundation for our digital infrastructure, and we’re continuing to build on it as part of our broader data platform.”
